The City of Pocatello is excited to announce its participation in National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, held from October 20 through 26. This annual observance is an important opportunity to raise awareness about the significant dangers associated with lead exposure and poisoning.
Through the Lead Safe and Healthy Homes Program, we are committed to educating parents, communities, and stakeholders on how to effectively reduce lead exposure in their environment, prevent serious health effects, and highlight the critical importance of testing children for lead.
Lead can be found in various places, inside and outside the home. Lead-based paint is the most prevalent source of lead exposure for children, which was widely used in homes built before 1978.
Children can be exposed to lead through several means, including, inhaling lead dust (especially during activities like renovations or repairs); swallowing lead dust that settles on food, surfaces, floors, or window sills; and ingesting paint chips or soil that contains lead. Additionally, children can be exposed to lead dust brought home by adults from their workplaces or hobbies, as well as from certain metal toys or toys painted with lead-based paint.
The health implications of lead exposure are severe, particularly for vulnerable young children. Lead poisoning can result in developmental delays, learning difficulties, and a host of other serious health issues. The good news is that this problem is largely preventable through increased testing, comprehensive education, and a focus on proactive prevention strategies.
During National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, we encourage community members to explore City resources and participate in local events aimed at fostering awareness and prevention. We believe that by coming together as a community, we can make significant strides in reducing lead exposure and protecting the health of children and families.
