The Pocatello Fire and Police Departments, along with Pocatello Telecommunication Operators (dispatch), worked tirelessly throughout the Fourth of July week handling a surge in calls for service related to firework violations, grass and brush fires, and a wildland fire that threatened homes.
Dispatch received numerous calls for illegal fireworks use early in the week. Officers responded to 136 reports of fireworks being discharged in prohibited areas and for the use of illegal fireworks. Officers issued 52 citations for firework violations. Officers and firefighters confiscated numerous illegal fireworks valued at approximately $9,500. The departments remind residents that fireworks laws are in place to ensure the safety of the community and to prevent property damage.
The Fire Department responded to six grass/brush fires, one house fire that started in a bush outside the home, and four dumpster fires from fireworks waste. The dry conditions and high temperatures created a heightened risk for fires, and quick responses from firefighters were essential to containing the blazes before they could spread.
The most significant event of the week was a wildland fire that broke out on the Fourth of July near Holman Avenue. The fire grew rapidly, prompting evacuations for several homes in the area. Officers worked closely with firefighters to conduct evacuation notifications and ensure the safety of residents. Thankfully, due to the swift and coordinated efforts of both departments, there were no injuries or structures lost in the wildland fire.

“This past week highlighted the importance of teamwork between our departments,” said Pocatello Police Chief Roger Schei. “The close collaboration between our first responders ensured a prompt and effective response to all emergencies.”
Fire Chief Ryan O’ Hearn echoed these sentiments, “we are grateful for the dedication and professionalism of our telecommunications officers, firefighters, and police officers. Their hard work and preparation helped to keep our community safe.”
The Pocatello Fire Department would like to remind residents of the importance of fire safety during the summer months. Please be mindful of fire restrictions in your area and keep fire safety in mind when enjoying summer vacations, camping, family reunions, and grilling.
