The City of Pocatello is proud to join communities nationwide in observing National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW), which takes place from October 19 to 25, 2025. This annual campaign raises awareness about the dangers of lead exposure and promotes ways families can prevent lead poisoning in their homes and neighborhoods.
Lead exposure most commonly occurs in homes built before 1978 due to deteriorating lead-based paint. Children can be exposed by inhaling or ingesting lead dust, paint chips, or contaminated soil. Lead dust can also be carried into the home from workplaces or hobbies, or found in certain metal toys. Exposure is especially dangerous for young children and can cause developmental delays, learning difficulties, and other serious health problems. The good news, lead poisoning is entirely preventable with proper education, testing, and prevention strategies.
Through the City’s Lead Safe & Healthy Homes Program, qualifying residents can get their homes made lead-safe and may also have other home health and safety issues addressed, all at no cost.
Lead poisoning is preventable, and early action makes a difference. To learn more or apply for the program, visit leaducate.pocatello.gov or call 208-252-0125.
This program is led by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, NLPPW encourages local outreach and education efforts to empower residents to take action.
