The city of Pocatello ranked 7th Best-Performing City (BPC) out of 203 less populated US metropolitan areas according to the annual BPC Milken Institute report. Each city was ranked on 13 indicators, including labor market, high-tech impact, community resilience, housing affordability, location, job growth, wage growth, and more.

In 2024, the city of Pocatello jumped 39 spots from being ranked 46th BPC to 7th place. According to the Milken Institute, the pandemic attributed to a shift in the US. Many jobs were created and with interest rates on mortgages doubling, many people are moving to places with attractive job offers and living costs. The report goes on to say while looking at the economic changes the group also ranked cities on “resilience to natural and economic disasters.”

According to the Milken Institute, the rankings provide a comprehensive assessment of a city’s performance. Four of the seven top-ranked smaller cities are located in Idaho.
